Crafting and manufacturing in SimCity BuildIt

A successful city starts with an industrial revolution. Factories produce raw materials (like metal, chemicals, and wood) and commercial buildings craft two or more items into different products (like chairs, garden gnomes, and flour bags). These manufactured and crafted items can be used to build and upgrade residential zones in your city or sold for extra Simoleons. Each one of these approaches will keep your Simoleon balance healthy!

Factories
Factories are the workhorses of your city, so keep them running as often as you can: Time is money!  If you see the chimneys smoking, your factories are working and manufacturing items. If sleepy "Zzzz" symbols appear above them, there’s nothing in production. Unlock a wider variety of production materials, more factory plots, and more efficient factories as you progress through the game.

Factory icon Tap the factory icon on the right of your screen to see the list of factory buildings, both those that could be built and those already active in your city.

You’ll see information about how different factory buildings can be placed in your city, when each is selected in the factory menu.

  • Building price – What will it cost to get the building up and running?
  • Production capacity – Items in factories can be manufactured concurrently: no need to wait for one item to finish before the next item can start! The more production slots a factory has, the more items you can make at the same time.
  • Dirty radius – We need factories, but they don’t make great neighbors. Factories emit stink zones known as a dirty radius (visible in brown on your factory map) and citizens will become unhappy living close to them. Try to place factories far from your residential zones and be sure to upgrade factories to cleaner, more efficient versions with a smaller dirty radius when you can!
  • Requirements – What population level must you reach before this building unlocks?

Factory Plots: As you level up you’ll unlock more factory plots – permits to place more factories in your city. A number will appear next to the factory icon on the right of your screen if more plots become available.

To build: When you’ve selected which factory you want, drag it onto the map. Make sure you consider the dirty radius visible on your map and its impact on the neighborhood! The white outline below the moving building shows where its footprint will be. It must be next to a road and not overlapping any other property. Zoom or rotate your view to see the location from different angles if you need more detail, then tap the green checkmark to confirm your choice.

To move: Tap and hold the factory you’d like to move, drag it to a different spot, and tap the green checkmark if you’re satisfied with the new placement. Watch the effects on the surrounding residential zones as you move the building; if you cover a residential zone with a dirty radius the citizens will become unhappy! Wherever you place the factory, remember to have a road next to it so it can keep its deliveries going.

To bulldoze: Bulldozing can be a very useful thing to do with factories. As factory plots are limited, you might need to demolish some of the older, dirtier, inefficient factories to make way for newer, cleaner factory buildings with more production slots. You’ll get some Simoleons back if you bulldoze factories that have been bought, too.

Bulldozer icon Tap and hold the factory to demolish, then tap the bulldozer icon that appears on the right side of the screen. A confirmation message will appear to confirm your decision.

When a factory in your city is tapped, you’ll see a view of the materials available for manufacture, the number of production slots available, and a timer for any materials that might be in production at that time. ProTip: Super-efficient Mayors can quickly scroll between each of their factories by clicking the yellow arrows now visible near the top of the screen, to make item production and collection easier!

How do I manufacture items?
Tap and hold each item in your factory to see:

  • Production time – how long will it take to make?
  • In City Storage – how many of these do you already have in your inventory?
  • If the item is unavailable – what level must you reach to unlock it?

Select the material you want to create by dragging it on top of the factory or dragging it into an available production slot. The production timer will start, and all production slots run concurrently! You won't have to wait for one slot to finish before the next begins.

When manufacturing is complete, your items will appear on top of the factory, where you can tap to collect them. You can also view them in their production slots when completed, if you are scrolling through your factories via the yellow arrows. If your City Storage is full and the finished items cannot be collected, they will stay there safely until you are able, but no further items can be manufactured in those production slots until they’re free again!

Commercial buildings
Commercial building icon Commercial buildings (e.g. stores and markets) are the more acceptable face of production in your city. Keep them open and crafting as often as you can. If lazy "Zzzz" icons appear above a commercial building, it’s not in use! Unlock a wide variety of crafting recipes and a broader range of commercial buildings as you progress through the game.

Tap the commercial building icon on the right of your screen to see the buildings available as well as those already in your city.

You’ll see information about how different commercial buildings can be placed in your city when each is selected in the menu.

  • Building price – What will it cost to get the building up and running?
  • Requirements – What XP level must you hit before this building unlocks?

As you level up you’ll unlock some cool commercial buildings. A number will appear next to thecommercial building icon on the right of your screen as more become available.

To build: When you’ve selected which commercial building you want, drag it onto the map. Your residents are happy to live beside stores and markets, so there's no need to consider neighborhood sentiment. The white outline below the moving building shows where its footprint will be. It must be next to a road and not overlapping any other property. Zoom or rotate your view to see the location from different angles if you need more detail, then tap the green checkmark to confirm your choice.

To move: Tap and hold the commercial building you’d like to move, drag it to a different spot, and tap the green checkmark if you’re satisfied with the new placement. Wherever you place the building, remember to have a road next to it so it can keep its deliveries going.

To bulldoze: Commercial buildings are too useful to remove – where would citizens go to get their furniture, donuts, and tomatoes? Won’t somebody think of the llamas?! There is no bulldoze option for commercial buildings.

When a commercial building in your city is tapped, you’ll see a view of the items possible to craft, the number of production slots available, and a countdown timer for any materials currently crafting. ProTip: Super-efficient Mayors can quickly scroll between each of their commercial buildings by clicking the yellow arrows now visible near the top of the screen, to make crafting and collection easier!

Each production slot in a commercial building runs one after the other: When one item finishes crafting, the next can begin. For super-duper efficiency, SimCash can be used in two ways here: Finish crafting an item immediately by tapping the yellow button beneath it, or purchase extra production slots!

How do I craft items in commercial buildings?
Tap and hold an item in your commercial building to see:

  • Production time – how long will it take to make?
  • In City Storage – how many of these do you already have in your inventory?
  • Required items – which materials do you need to fill this crafting recipe?
  • If the item is unavailable – what Level is needed to unlock it?

Select the item you want to create by dragging it on top of the commercial building, or dragging it directly into an available production slot. Any items missing from the recipe can be bought with SimCash at this point to save time. When crafting begins, the required items are removed from your City Storage and the crafting timer will start counting down.

When crafting is complete your items will appear on top of the commercial building or in their production slots, where you can tap to collect them. If your City Storage is full and the finished items cannot be collected, they will stay there safely until you are able, but no further items can be crafted until production slots are free again!
